The Department of Built Environment Engineering delivers the following courses
This course aims at providing students with theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed for the Construction Industry which is the largest industry in Oman and in the region. The course will provide the students with the underpinning knowledge giving foundation to a range of professions within the Construction Industry.
Students are required to complete a 12 credits for HNC award which includes core and optional units.
The present employment opportunities in the Construction Industry of Oman and in the region are very high. Qualified persons can work as Site supervisors or clerk of works in government as well as private sector. They can also work with consultant firms of architects, quantity surveyors etc.

Quantity surveyors are the financial and contractual managers within a construction Industry. The course aims at providing students with practical skills and theoretical knowledge needed for taking significant managerial and supervisory responsibilities for working in the various areas of quantity surveying profession. The course will provide students with requisite understanding and knowledge base to meet the needs of employers within this profession

There is an increasing demand for quantity surveyors in Oman and internationally. Graduates are able to find promising careers in government and private sectors as quantity surveyors or in the offices contractors, real estate companies, insurance sector, construction contracting companies, and firms specialised in land and building surveying.

The realisation of projects involves many activates including construction, maintenance, refurbishment. Such activities requires experts to plan the construction process, mobilise the resources, coordinate with specialist services taking responsibility for the safe and timely completion of the projects to the budget and specified standards.
The aim of the course is to equip the students with necessary skills to develop them to dynamic Construction Mangers. After completing the course student will be able to forecast, plan, organise and control physical and human resource needed for the accomplishment of a construction Project.
A student needs to complete 30 core and optional units to qualify for HND Construction Management.
The graduates from this specialization are trained to work in private or government sectors as a part of construction management team as Construction Managers, Construction Planners etc... They can also work in areas of housing associations, local authorities, construction companies, architectural and construction consultants etc

The course deals with basics in computing wherein candidates understand the concepts of computing and to use Information Technology (IT) in various applications. During this course, candidates get familiarised with various computer operating systems and applications packages. Candidates are introduced to basic concepts and principles of computer networks and data communication. They also learn to develop software programmes using programming languages.
The potential areas of employment for candidates completing their HNC would be: Technical support and Data processing operations in Ministries and Private organisations, Network support for Personal computers in Banks, Hospitals, Ministries and Private organisations, Help desk personnel for application packages in internal maintenance sections in Private organisations or Ministries.
The course is made up of core and optional units. Each unit has a credit value and it is linked with the number of contact hours per semester required for the study. To complete HNC Computing the candidate has to achieve 15 credits in total, out of which 10 credits are core (mandatory) and the remainder 5 credits are optional. The framework is divided into three semesters in which units are divided into 5 credits per semester. The academic advisor will advise the candidate while choosing the units during the beginning of each semester and monitors the progress of the each candidate. A new framework is introduced from academic year 2006-07 wherein candidates have to achieve 12 credits in total ( Core: 6 credits and Optional: 6 credits).

There are 8 lecturers in the department who are well qualified to handle all units related to Diploma and Bachelor levels.
v HND COMPUTING: SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT
The course deals with computer software and development techniques wherein candidates develop skills in advanced levels of Programming, System development, Database principles and Project Management. The course also helps candidates develop the skills necessary for the present environment.
The potential areas of employment for candidates completing their HND would be: Programmers in advanced languages like C++, Java and Visual Basic for organisations requiring development of software modules or design of Web pages. Also in areas of Software engineering for organisations involving operations with data structures.
The course is made up of core and optional units. Each unit has a credit value and it is linked with the number of contact hours per semester required for the study. To complete HND Computing Software Development the candidate has to achieve 30 credits in total, out of which 24 credits are core (mandatory) and the remainder 6 credits are optional. The framework is divided into three semesters in which units are divided into 5 credits per semester. The academic advisor will advise the candidate while choosing the units during the beginning of each semester and monitors the progress of the each candidate. The potential areas of employment for candidates completing their HND would be: Network Administration in major organisations involving local area networks (LAN) and wide area networks (WAN), Installation and maintenance of Computer Server equipment in private organisations and ministries.
The course is made up of core and optional units. Each unit has a credit value and it is linked with the number of contact hours per semester required for the study. To complete HND Computing Technical Support the candidate has to achieve 30 credits in total, out of which 24 credits are core (mandatory) and the remainder 6 credits are optional. The framework is divided into three semesters in which units are divided into 5 credits per semester. The academic advisor will advise the candidate while choosing the units during the beginning of each semester and monitors the progress of the each candidate. A new framework is introduced from academic year 2006-07 wherein candidates have to achieve 30 credits in total (Core: 17 credits and Optional: 13 credits).

The course aims also to promote practical ability and understanding of the current state of information technology and its uses in business. In addition, the course will introduce students to training and development. The course consists of 6 units. Each unit has 22 credit points.
Accounting and Financial advisors are involved in a wide variety of work and are highly in demand in almost every company, and organization in the public sector as well as in the private sector. This course is designed to combine the subjects of accountancy and finance in a single course. The course will provide students with grounding in theory and analytical techniques required by professionals operating in financial services industry. The study involves an examination of the tow aspects of financial: risk and return, introduction to financial securities and also understanding the key aspects of investment and the use of published financial statements. Students will consider different approaches to the assessment of business income, and how firms and investors make financial decisions and manage risk, and how financial markets function.
